Rehabilitation & Follow-up
The Rehabilitation and Follow-up Programme under the Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida Initiative (HSI) is focused on rebuilding the life of a child after surgery and ensuring that recovery continues long after the hospital discharge. The programme recognizes that treatment is only the beginning, and that true healing happens through consistent care, guidance, and support that helps each child adapt, grow, and participate meaningfully in daily life.
At the center of this programme is structured physical restoration and functional therapy, delivered through regular rehabilitation sessions. Children who experience challenges with movement, posture, balance, or muscle control are guided through tailored activities that help them regain strength and improve coordination. These sessions are designed not only to improve mobility but also to build confidence and independence in performing everyday activities such as sitting, standing, walking, and self-care.
The programme also places strong emphasis on continuous child development tracking, where each child’s growth journey is closely observed over time. This includes monitoring physical, cognitive, and sensory development to ensure that any emerging challenges are identified early. When delays or difficulties are detected in areas such as communication, learning, hearing, or vision, timely support is arranged to prevent further developmental setbacks and to improve long-term outcomes.
A key pillar of the programme is home-based caregiver empowerment, where parents and guardians are equipped with practical skills to become active participants in the rehabilitation process. Families are trained to integrate simple therapy routines into daily life, turning ordinary home activities into opportunities for recovery and development. They are also guided on how to recognize early warning signs of complications, respond to emergencies such as seizures, and understand when urgent medical attention is required. This approach ensures that care continues beyond clinical settings and becomes part of everyday living.
Through this programme, HSI builds a recovery journey that is continuous, family-centered, and community-supported. It moves beyond clinical treatment to focus on long-term wellbeing, helping children not only recover physically but also develop the ability to learn, interact, and thrive within their environments.
