Sustainability Programs

The Sustainability Programme under the Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida Initiative (HSI) is designed to ensure the long-term continuity, stability, and effectiveness of the organization’s services. It focuses on building systems that allow families to consistently access care, strengthening resource mobilization, and maintaining essential medical and support services for children with hydrocephalus, spina bifida, and other birth defects.

A key component of this programme is health insurance and donor navigation support. HSI works with families to help them understand available health financing options, including enrollment into national or community health insurance schemes where possible, as well as guiding them in accessing grants, donor assistance, and sponsorship opportunities. This reduces the financial burden on families and improves continuity of care, especially for long-term treatment needs.

The programme also runs periodic medical outreach camps, which serve as critical touchpoints for ongoing monitoring and care. These camps provide free or subsidized services such as general checkups, shunt assessments, medication refills, and basic neurological evaluations. By bringing services closer to communities on a scheduled basis, HSI reduces travel costs, improves follow-up rates, and ensures that children remain under consistent medical supervision.

Another important pillar is the Volunteer Specialist Engagement Programme, which brings together neurosurgeons, pediatricians, physiotherapists, and other medical professionals to offer their expertise on a voluntary or pro bono basis. These specialists dedicate time—often on a monthly basis—to support consultations, training, and sometimes direct patient care. This model strengthens local capacity while expanding access to highly specialized services that would otherwise be difficult for many families to afford.

Through this sustainability framework, HSI ensures that its interventions are not short-term responses but continuous support systems that evolve with community needs. By combining financial guidance, outreach services, and professional volunteerism, the organization strengthens its ability to deliver consistent, life-changing care while maintaining operational stability for the future.
